What to Do When You Catch a Shoplifter

When you catch a shoplifter in your store, will you call the police or do you have something else in mind? In the area of Durango, Colorado, this one liquor store owner has his own way of dealing with the shoplifters. Gabe Fidanque of the Wagon Wheel Liquors has experienced a lot of shoplifters in his liquor store. He says that there’s a high level of foot traffic in the store’s area that has caused shoplifters to frequent his store. He used to report shoplifters to the police. But after a while, he gave up. The shoplifters would actually go back to the store in just a few hours after their arrest. That’s why Mr. Fidanque started looking for alternatives.

According to the liquor store owner, he started finding other methods on dealing with robbers about two years ago. He was so frustrated that even though he reported the shoplifters and they were arrested, they would come back that very same day. So since then, his new way of dealing with them involves a shoe! He tells the shoplifter “I’m either calling the police or you give me one of your shoes”. Perhaps no one cared about their shoes that they easily gave in to the owner’s request. Don’t you think so? But what if one shoplifter really loves his or her shoes, do you think the thief will just surrender himself or herself?  Kidding aside, Mr. Fidanque has become famous for his unique way of dealing with shoplifters that word reached the city police. That’s why now, he is being asked to stop his unique method and just follow the traditional way of dealing with shoplifters.

According to authorities, giving up property, which is what he has been doing, is equivalent to felony robbery. On the other hand, a shoplifter caught in the act is just a misdemeanor. So substituting felony over a misdemeanor will cause Mr. Fidanque more trouble than the shoplifter! I wonder if the authorities ever thought of who the real criminal is. In fact, most of the neighboring liquor store owners applaud Mr. Fidanque for his unique method and even want to copy it. Nevertheless, Mr. Fidanque said he will stop it right away and think of something else.
