It was in Corte Madera California that a sea lion chose to join a group of kids on a walkathon. I know this sounds ridiculous since a sea lion doesn’t even have feet to walk on. A sea lion instead, has flippers. It doesn’t have any hiking boots or sneakers just like anyone who wants to do a walkathon. However, it didn’t prevent one sea lion to join a group of kids walking along the San Francisco Bay.
It was a Friday morning when a group of school children held a walkathon. It was setup near the bay at the Marin Country Day School last week. Perhaps, the sea lion saw the kids having fun. Thus, he wanted to join the group. It was Astro, a one year old Steller sea lion who already weighs 185 pounds. The sea lion waddled ashore to follow the group of students on a walkathon. The kids and teachers saw what the sea lion was trying to do and they were all shocked.
The children were doing the laps when they saw that Astro the sea lion was trying to join in the fun. According to one of the teachers and Director of Constituent relations and Web Communications, Ms. Kelly Watson, “the sea lion made a whole lap”. Perhaps the sea lion wanted to work out? Or probably he’s just lonely and wants to follow what the kids are doing. According to the staff at the Marin Headlands-based Marine Mammal Center, the sea lion was found at the Año Nuevo Island last year in June. The baby sea lion was abandoned by its mother just off the coast of San Mateo. That’s why Astro was forced to be bottle-fed, according to biologists. Last month, the biologists have released Astro, now an adolescent, with a radio tag so they can monitor him. Still, it seems that he loves humans as he keeps coming back to places where he could see civilization. Last week, Astro was swimming under the Golden Gate Bridge and went to the Corte Madera shores. He was picked up and dropped 27 miles away from San Francisco. But this Friday, he made it back just in time to join the kids walkathon.
